Nov 9, 2019 at 0:43 comment added phoog In those days, "president" would have been thought of less as a title than as the name of an office, so it's not really a double title. Similarly Mr. Speaker, Mr. Justice, and so on. Why Mr. Senator seems never to have been in favor, I do not know.
