Jan 16, 2023 at 21:11 comment added JonathanReez @StuartF at least in the US, Social Security is paid to all (eligible) pensioners, so it's not based on need. The question is why government workers can't rely on Social Security alone, as that's what the private sectors employees rely on.
Jan 16, 2023 at 21:10 comment added Stuart F You're confusing occupational pensions, which used to be common in both private and public sector and depends on pay/seniority, with the minimum state pension, an element of social security which is based on need.

Dec 10, 2019 at 22:03 comment added JonathanReez @Trilarion there is a government pension system in place for the public though (e.g. Social Security in the US). Why can't government employees use it?
Dec 10, 2019 at 21:57 comment added NoDataDumpNoContribution The government is often the biggest employer and has the critical mass for creating its own pension system.
Dec 10, 2019 at 21:40 comment added dandavis Over one-third of government employees (37%) belong to a union, versus 6% of all private sector employees. People who bargain together by and large get better outcomes.
