Jul 29, 2022 at 16:45 | comment | added | prosfilaes | The Bundesrepublik Deutschland (the Federal Republic of Germany, then West Germany, now Germany) likewise called themselves Germany, and in both cases the German people at least includes many of the people of Austria and Switzerland, so Germany has only ever included most of the German people under Hitler.

Nov 17, 2020 at 3:09 | comment | added | ohwilleke♦ | Countries get named when they are established. Republic has a narrow meaning which is "not a hereditary monarchy" in addition to its broader sense, and when it was formed, that was an accurate description of North Korea. It has since evolved into a de facto monarchy without changing its name. So, that part was once true. "Democratic People's Republic" as a phrase and not parsed out word by word, is the common name for one party communist countries.

You can't avoid knowing these details when you grow up living in that part of the state.) Then Texas joined the union against considerable opposition (until Polk was elected).

...if a country or organization uses any of the phrases "for the People", "freedom", or "Patriotic" in their title... A good example of this is the Patriot Act

Nov 16, 2020 at 18:08 | comment | added | OrangeDog | "Republic" is usually in contrast to e.g. a monarchy, and "people's" signifies a communist ideology and structure. By reasonable definitions, North Korea is indeed a People's Republic. Other people can argue about what "democratic" actually means.

Nov 16, 2020 at 13:15 | comment | added | gerrit | By the reasoning of your 4th point, the name of the United States of America is also a lie.
Nov 16, 2020 at 12:45 | comment | added | osiris | @PCLuddite, I guess that, in the end, there can be only one.
Nov 15, 2020 at 19:58 | comment | added | PC Luddite | @Kat I'm not saying it's a lie, but they are deliberately implying they are the only one
Nov 15, 2020 at 17:23 | comment | added | Kat | @PCLuddite sure, but that doesn't make the "of Korea" in their name a lie. They are both governments of Korea.
Nov 15, 2020 at 16:24 | comment | added | PC Luddite | @Kat both countries claim that they are the only legitimate government of the entire peninsula. The Korean War technically never ended, they just went into a cold war status.
Nov 15, 2020 at 8:09 | comment | added | Brenton Thomas | As they say, the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, nor Roman nor an Empire and lasted a thousand years. So this must be seen as a continuation of the great tradition that while you can't fool all of the people all of the time, you sure as hell can fool most them most of the time.
Nov 15, 2020 at 3:02 | comment | added | Owen Reynolds | @TooTea Maybe not a great example. From 13 colonies the USA took over Spanish land, French land, coined "manifest destiny", invaded Canada, took native land, took Texas from Mexico. The name of the country pretty much telegraphed their plans of domination.
Nov 14, 2020 at 22:48 | comment | added | leftaroundabout | @TooTea maybe it is their secret long-term goal, but the founding fathers required that after Alaska the next state to annex be Greenland, so as long as Denmark refuses to sell it the rest of the Americas is safe...
Nov 14, 2020 at 22:11 | comment | added | TooTea | @Kat Yeah, just like the United States of America do not mean to imply that their long-term goal is to annex Canada and all the rest of the two continents. (Or at least, I hope so.)
Nov 14, 2020 at 21:14 | comment | added | Kat | IMO "of Korea" doesn't imply it's referring to all of Korea, just that it's in Korea.
Nov 14, 2020 at 19:41 | comment | added | Mast | "It only covers North Korea, not the entirety." Did you know that South Korea does the same thing? They call themselves the Republic of Korea. Without specifying it's just the south part. Both Koreas want reunification. They have an odd way of going about it, sure, but both countries eventually want reunification.
