It allows a leak of information to parties (and even voters) prior to the close of voting. Even pre-canvassing allows some impressonistic data to leak. Excludsing observers from the process would reduce that - but would also be problematic. Not really an expert on the US system, but it would seem that the US's chaotic voter registration system may be a large party of the problem if it significantly slows down the validation process. | |
Nov 23, 2020 at 19:17 | comment | added | Colin | @Ben While it's true that the failure of PA to repeal or suspend its ban on pre-counting in the context of the 2020 pandemic was an antidemocratic ploy, the question is about all states that have these restrictions and inclusive of why they had those restrictions in the first place. To your point about pre-canvassing, pre-canvassing includes " the counting, computing and tallying of the votes reflected on the ballots", but not "publishing", so a ban on pre-canvassing is in fact consistent with concerns about prematurely leaked tallies. | |

It leads to you sounding anti-republican and could in turn lead to someone who is not already informed about the behavior that happened to be skeptical of claims from someone who may just be bad mouthing a party they don't like. | |
