As for answering purely about the military violence, the question doesn't limit expected answers to this. Since this is a political issue with threat of bias, the answer should be complete in its coverage of reasons.
May 18, 2021 at 15:34 | comment | added | Italian Philosopher | @AhmedTawfik I was answering purely about the military violence. For what it's worth, I believe Israel should implement UN resolution 242, go for a 2 state solution and that it has no business whatsoever building settlements on disputed areas. But I also believe Hamas is giving Israel a convenient excuse not to negotiate in good faith, by the very nature of what Hamas wants to achieve, which is the removal of Israel. Why should Israel negotiate on that? Right now, Hamas is also rescuing Netanyahu's popularity for him.
May 18, 2021 at 15:28 | comment | added | Ahmed Tawfik | @ItalianPhilosophers4Monica The question asks "why Gaza is being attacked now". The reasons go beyond the actual military violence. Palestinians being forced out of their homes and being shot at while praying are the initial reasons. This situation is no different to common school bullying scenarios where the bullied lashes out at the bully due to their provocations, only for the bullied to be labelled the instigator. Do you see the similarity here?
May 18, 2021 at 15:20 | comment | added | Italian Philosopher | @AhmedTawfik This question is asking about what started the rocket launches vs Israeli strike situation. Hamas launched first. In 2014, Israel struck first. My answer does cover that police action was either the main cause or a partial cause to get Hamas to launch. But this question, as I understand it, was not about why there was police action in the first place or whether it was justified.
May 18, 2021 at 15:08 | comment | added | Ahmed Tawfik | I don't understand how you can come to the conclusion that Hamas was the instigator "Hamas' leadership decision to pull the trigger" when footage from a few days earlier clearly shows armed police firing at protestors who were praying?
May 17, 2021 at 14:14 | comment | added | Valorum | With over 3000 rockets fired, it's pretty clear that Hamas had a huge stockpile that they needed to use.

May 16, 2021 at 19:28 | comment | added | Italian Philosopher | @BurnsBA if you feel like writing up an answer explaining how the amount of deaths and property destructions, inflicted on either side, is proportionate to either the mosque police presence or the evictions, feel free to do so. This time it was Hamas starting things. Other times it has been Israel. Either way, it's generally the people doing the suffering and the leaders escalating. So I'll stick to my characterization, thank you. It is a core part of my answer, in that the immediate causes are secondary to the existence of a long cycle of violence which can get retriggered at any time.
May 16, 2021 at 13:08 | comment | added | BurnsBA | This answer could be improved by removing the entirely subjective commentary, "way out of proportion to its original cause"

May 15, 2021 at 19:40 | comment | added | Italian Philosopher | I'll take some more look but I think it's just a spontaneous flare up. It's happened before, they get started for some reason that doesn't seem super important, get some real momentum of violence going and take a while before things settle down. Once the militants decide they have a reason and launch, things move on their own, but knowing why Hamas decided it needed to launch is going to be speculation. Don't think their public statements are going to be very informative either.
