There must be better ways to spend resources for the benefit of ordinary people. Or at least it can be used to build tech that can be used to harvest minerals on the Moon.

We have attained considerable understanding on different effects of pressure, temperature etc. on the elements and how it behaves(and how useful it can be!). The only thing extraordinary about Mars(compared to earth), is the presence of radiation, high solar flares etc. which I suppose can be done on moon itself.
