However Brandt was given the "choice" to either have him arrested or to leave him be and slightly reduce his acces to not cause suspission in the USSR, so that the BND might intercept/use his communications to Moscow to gain usefull intelligence. When Brandt was briefed about this however, his advisors HEAVYLY leaned into the second option leading too Brandt picking it.

Mar 4, 2022 at 9:49 | comment | added | Peter - Reinstate Monica | @jwenting I didn't think of that until now then but: If, in a situation of mutual paranoia like the Cold War, you want to convince the other side of your peaceful intentions -- one of the best means could be to tolerate a spy in your team who could report first-hand. They may not believe your official statements but they would believe their own source reporting from internal deliberations. Especially if you are not in a position to make a unilateral first step.
Mar 3, 2022 at 21:59 | comment | added | convert | @jwenting It was not a sowiet spy, but from East Germany.
Mar 3, 2022 at 13:12 | comment | added | Oliver Mason | @jwenting That was Willy Brandt, not Schmidt.
Mar 3, 2022 at 12:49 | comment | added | jwenting | and then of course there's Helmut Schmidt, who had very close ties to the USSR (including (probably knowingly) employing a Soviet spy as his personal secretary).
Mar 3, 2022 at 10:34 | comment | added | convert | @uhoh So as far I understood it, it´s unnatural from his point of view.
Mar 3, 2022 at 10:31 | comment | added | Peter - Reinstate Monica | @uhoh It's unnatural from an American standpoint only.
Mar 3, 2022 at 8:21 | comment | added | quarague | This is one aspect but one should note that Gerhard Schroeder was heavily critized for his pro Putin stance during the last couple of years even by members of the SPD.

+1 but I still don't understand McMaster's deliberate choice of the word unnatural; can you include something about that in your answer post? What would be so unnatural about it? Thanks!
