However, Russia is still selling gas to some EU countries, and they were making more money from that than from larger peace-time quantities - the "price cap" actually does not cap the price, but they forbid services for oil&gas sold at higher prices, e.g. making it harder or impossible to insure such oil transports. | |

Politicians support price caps because it makes it look like they're "doing something" to people who don't understand how economics work and it makes them more likely to be re-elected in the short term, even though it's usually bad for the population in the longer term. The goal of politicians is to stay in power. Not all means of doing so, even in a democracy, are actually helpful to the people, especially in the shorter term. | |
