This question is not about whether or not Trump and co. are being manipulated by Russia. A discussion of that and any pertinent evidence is best left for another post. No, I'm asking about why Russia would want to do so.

Suppose that Russia is in fact blackmailing high-ranking members of our government. What's in it for Russia? Why would they want to lord over us?

Obvious answer: because Russia as a state has interests, they necessarily clash with interests and policies of US, and blackmail of US leader might achieve the goal of furthering said interests of Russia due to a change of approach in those US's conflicting policies. Why else would anyone want to blackmail a head of state? – user4012 Feb 18 '17 at 10:56

  • Calling it "want to lord it over us" is pejorative, and does not lead to understanding. They simply want everything to go their way, just as everyone else does. – jmoreno Sep 22 '17 at 13:06
