A response to a comment here has caused me to wonder: Are voters strongly motivated by increase in debt? Obviously this question is not appropriate for a Q&A stack.

Here is my attempt at formulating an answerable question motivated by this thought.

Are there any studies showing the likelihood of a populace approving of programs or policies financed by debt (explained via political hand-waving) over the same programs or policies funded by a direct tax increase?
