Interestingly, the name that China and Taiwan compromised on (for the Olympics at least) is not ROC, but ["Chinese Taipei"](https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/23/asia/taiwan-referendum-olympic-chinese-taipei-intl/index.html). China rejected the ROC name, which Taiwan wanted to keep on using.

I don't know if that mini-settlement has any implications for the naming of Taiwan in other contexts. The other answer states that China wants Taiwan to keep using the ROC name, but offers no source in support...
