Bernie Sanders is an Independent Senator from Vermont. He unsuccessfully ran for President as a Democrat (the party with which he caucuses in the Senate) in 2016 and 2020. Use this tag alongside the [united-states] tag.

Bernie Sanders is a Senator from the state of Vermont and an Independent (meaning he is not affiliated with a party). He caucuses with the , however, and is typically counted as such for Senate voting tallies.

Sanders is openly Socialist in his viewpoints (in the vein of ) and gained a great deal of notoriety in 2016 when he ran for President under the Democratic ticket against . When internal DNC emails were leaked, it was revealed that several members of the party leadership (most notably then DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz) were working against Sanders candidacy, which created a scandal that ultimately saw Schultz resign. Sanders lost the DNC nomination to Clinton.

Sanders has remained a popular figure with those who voted for him. It is widely considered the reason for his 2020 Presidential bid.
