The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) is the investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice, with its head reporting to the President. Use this tag for questions about the politics of the bureau itself, and not merely for investigations the FBI may be involved with.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations(FBI) was founded in 1908, and underwent several name changes before finally being named the FBI.

The FBI serves as the investigative portion of the Department of Justice(DOJ). The FBI can only investigate and refer to the DOJ. The DOJ itself contains US Attorneys, and other prosecutors, who actually bring charges before Federal courts.

Questions about the FBI should be limited to the political portions of the FBI (i.e. why the FBI director was fired, etc), and not about FBI prosecutions or legal actions (except where they pertain to politics). If you are interested in the legal procedures used by the FBI, consider posting such questions to Law.SE
