Mar 8, 2022 at 17:50 comment added Kevin Unfortunately, this answer is probably right. I say "unfortunately" because a prolonged insurgency is likely to result in substantial loss of human life, and even if Russia does eventually leave, it would be extremely painful for Ukraine and its people.

Because the Chinese haven't telegraphed an agenda that they might not stop there. Whereas for Putin: the Baltic countries have 25% Russian population, to whom he gave them citizenship, there's Transnistria to make a corridor to, and that will probably include Odessa. Etc.
