SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again denied Friday that her country has exported any weapons to Russia, as she labeled outside speculation on North Korea-Russian arms dealings as “the most absurd paradox.”

The U.S., South Korea and others have steadfastly accused North Korea of supplying artillery, missiles and other conventional weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine in return for advanced military technologies and economic aid. Both North Korea and Russia have repeatedly dismissed that.

Foreign experts believe North Korea’s recent series of artillery and short-range missile tests were meant to examine or advertise the weapons it was planning to sell to Russia.

Kim Yo Jong called outside assessments on the North Korean-Russian dealings “the most absurd paradox which is not worth making any evaluation or interpretation.”

Although there is no firm evidence linking direct weapons sales between North Korea and Hamas, recent accounts of North Korean arms in the hands of nonstate armed actors (NSAAs) such as Hamas and the Russian-based Wagner Group have drawn renewed attention to North Korea’s long-standing involvement in the global illicit arms trade.

What does North Korea gain from denying that the country provided weapons to Russia? From what I've read, it seems North Korea sent considerable amount of shells and other weaponry to Russia, but both Russia and North Korea deny this. Is there a particular reason why they're denying it, especially since there's evidence that North Korea provided arms to Russia?

Probably not the full picture, but keep in mind NK is currently under UN sanction, which iirc is a sanction Russia voted for as well. Publicly admitting you're violating that is a pretty bad image, even among countries which don't really care about the war. Probably also an admission of weakness, if NK is the main place you're sourcing weapons from.

Russia is fighting very unpopular wars. It certainly doesn't benefit North Korea to acknowledge that they are the ones supplying the arms.

  • Russia possibly doesn't want people to know it's dependent on NK, and could have asked NK to keep quiet.

The obvious reason is that Russia is under international sanctions for invading Ukraine. Japan and South Korea have already announced new sanctions against North Korea as a direct result of these arm sales to Russia. While North Korean denial accomplishes little to nothing, it's completely unsurprising.

The country is simply denying something it hasn't done, so that is it. It is not a matter of gain or loss. What's more, if the West has made North Korea a rogue country, which country of the West will care about what it said? The answer has been given even before North Korea can open its mouth.
